Background of the Study
Driver shortages have become a significant challenge for the logistics and transportation industry globally, including in Nigeria. These shortages, driven by factors such as an aging workforce, low recruitment rates, and challenging work conditions, adversely affect supply chain performance by causing delivery delays, increased operational costs, and reduced customer satisfaction (Okafor & Musa, 2023).

Dangote Transport, a critical player in Nigeria’s supply chain ecosystem, faces similar issues, particularly in Yobe State. The region’s unique geographical and socio-economic challenges exacerbate the problem, further straining supply chain operations. This study explores the effects of driver shortages on Dangote Transport’s performance and identifies potential mitigation strategies (Ahmed & Sule, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Driver shortages present a pressing issue for supply chain performance in Nigeria, particularly for companies like Dangote Transport that operate in challenging terrains like Yobe State. The shortage of qualified drivers leads to delayed deliveries, reduced fleet utilization, and increased costs. Despite its importance, limited research has been conducted to assess the specific impact of driver shortages on supply chain performance in this context (Adewale & Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the causes of driver shortages in Dangote Transport’s operations in Yobe State.
  2. To assess the impact of driver shortages on supply chain performance.
  3. To propose strategies for mitigating driver shortages in Dangote Transport’s logistics operations.

Research Questions

  1. What are the causes of driver shortages in Dangote Transport’s operations in Yobe State?
  2. How do driver shortages impact supply chain performance?
  3. What strategies can mitigate driver shortages in Dangote Transport’s logistics operations?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: Driver shortages do not significantly affect supply chain performance.
  2. H0: The causes of driver shortages are not significantly related to operational inefficiencies.
  3. H0: Mitigation strategies do not significantly improve driver availability and supply chain performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Dangote Transport’s operations in Yobe State, emphasizing the impact of driver shortages on supply chain performance. Limitations include the availability of accurate data and external factors such as security concerns in the region.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Driver Shortages: A lack of sufficient qualified drivers to meet logistics demand.
  2. Supply Chain Performance: The efficiency and effectiveness of supply chain processes, including delivery times and costs.
  3. Fleet Utilization: The degree to which a transportation company uses its vehicle fleet effectively.
